We need to head to Nantes in the Loire River region of France to explore this small but incredible wooden construction, which serves as a unique guest accommodation option.
Architect Aurélie Poirrier, working together with Igor-Vassili, Pouchkarevtch-Dragoche and Vincent O’Connor, was eager to provide guests with the opportunity to rediscover this almost-forgotten area of the river and, as a result, came up with a new 15-square-metre mobile housing concept.
Developed in 2013, the house has become a haven for nature lovers and those looking for a different and special place for an overnight stay. The small boat-cabin welcomes guests between the months of May and October every year to enjoy the tranquillity of the surrounding landscape.
Its structure is based on a combination of naval and airship carpentry; the former providing the wooden hull and an incredible optimisation of space and the latter inspiring the light outer fabric envelope and ample space, despite the size.
The 15-square-metre bedroom includes a number of subspaces. Entry is through a pair of horizontal swing doors, the lower part of which leads to the covered entrance deck. The cockpit is separated from the rest of the vessel in such a way that guests can literally sleep under a starry sky and watch the sunrise.
Another area, featuring a 360° revolving barrel-shaped door, houses the hidden bathroom which is equipped with a sink and dry toilet.
Once the season is over, the structure is packed away for the following year, ready to be built again with the arrival of the warm weather, so that visitors can continue to enjoy the wonderful landscape.
